Thorndon School, a medium sized full primary school, was established in 1852, making it the oldest primary school in Wellington. The school is focused on developing the whole child and offers a broad, experience based curriculum.
Location and Facilities
The school is on a small site in the heart of Wellington just 5 minutes from Parliament. It is within walking distance of facilities such as the Public Library, Te Papa and the City Gallery and the school sees the city itself as one of its major resources. We have highspeed internet access, up to date ICT resources, a well stocked library, a dedicated music room and a hall which is used for cultural and sporting activities.
Academic Programme
Thorndon School provides a broad based education within the New Zealand Curriculum and has a particular focus on the Arts. We offer a comprehensive and well resourced extension and enrichment programme, a vibrant EOTC syllabus and use a range of teaching methods to deliver the curriculum. Our children achieve well in nationally normed assessment tasks and we enjoy considerable success in extra-curricular competitions and activities.
Extra Curricular Programmes
Children are encouraged to particpate in a range of sporting opportunities and groups of children are regularly involved in a variety of music, dance, drama, and art competitions and performances, often working with expert mentors from outside the school.
International Programme
The school has taken international students for the past 10 years and has developed considerable experience. We provide specialised language support wherever possible.
Accommodation
The school is unable to offer homestay facilities and international families must make their own arrangements for accommodation.
Fees
Tuition fees are set at $11,000 per year or $275 per week. A non-refundable administration fee of $150:00 is also payable. Students are required to have health insurance.
