At Samuel Marsden Collegiate School
Six Year 11 and six Year 12 Chinese language students, accompanied by their teacher Ms Chunrong Song and Ms Margaret Adeane (Academic Director) have recently returned from a wonderful 16 day trip to China. Through Wellington’s sister-city relationship with Xiamen and the Wellington-Xiamen Association we were fortunate enough to receive an invitation to visit Xiamen on an educational exchange programme.
We chose to spend six days as tourists in Beijing before travelling onwards to Xiamen. In Beijing students experienced the rich culture and heritage of In Beijing students experienced the rich culture and heritage of China as they walked the Great Wall, visited the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, the Olympic Stadium and Tiananmen Square. The hustle and bustle of Beijing was experienced when bargaining in the markets and travelling by subway in peak hour - a very physical reminder of the differences in population density between Beijing and our own capital city.
The China trip was an outstanding success and cemented a relationship between ourselves and our sister city. We hope that it is the first of many such exchanges. At Marsden we recognize the increasing importance of our relationships with Asia and believe it is important to foster and strengthen communication across our cultures. Xie xie to the Wellington-Xiamen Association for giving us this opportunity.
